Primary care physicians are often involved in the initial recognition of chemically dependent patients, even though physicians may ultimately refer such patients to specialists for treatment. To intervene effectively in the disease of chemical dependency, physicians need to know how to obtain and evaluate pertinent laboratory, physical, and historical information associated with drug and alcohol abuse.
