Neonates with diagnosed or suspected congenital cardiac lesions generally require emergency transport to a tertiary care center shortly after birth. This article reviews the special needs of neonates with congenital cardiac defects who require this emergency transport. A case study is presented, and the special roles of nurses in referring institutions as well as nurses specializing in transport are addressed.
