Abstract
The bronchodilator response to 5 mg nebulized salbutamol was studied in 20 elderly patients with stable chronic airflow limitation. Salbutamol produced significantly greater increases in FEV1 and FVC compared with placebo although there was no difference in subjective sensation of breathlessness. Spirometry can be successfully used to assess respiratory function in appropriately selected elderly patients with chronic airflow limitation.
