Talking with children: some basic counselling skills.

The ability to listen to a child is the starting point of a therapeutic relationship. The nurse should respect the child as an individual. An understanding of child development, particularly of language and thought processes, helps adults to communicate more effectively with children. Play may be an appropriate way of communicating with younger children.
