In 1994, with U.S. hospitals adopting managed care as the new competitive edge, Assistant Professor of Nursing Judith Shindul-Rothschild decided to repeat a 1989 survey of hospital nurses to determine the impact on patient care. She surveyed nearly 900 Massachusetts nurses, producing a study that raises disturbing questions about the quality of hospital care. An interview with senior writer John Ombelets.
