A review of the error rate of cervicovaginal cytology in light of the increasing litigation over alleged misread Pap smears is presented. Public expectation for the eradication of death from carcinoma of the cervix has not been realized. The gap between that expectation and test performance of the Pap smear is examined historically and in light of current regulations that impact on cytology laboratories. It is imperative to educate the public as to the value and limitations of screening for cervical cancer by the Pap smear and to develop reasonable practitioner standards for the performance of the test. The current climate of increasing litigation over alleged false-negative Pap smears has the potential to reduce the use and availability of this test which is still considered the most effective cancer screening test devised.
鉴于因所谓巴氏涂片误读引发的诉讼不断增加，本文对宫颈阴道细胞学检查的错误率进行了综述。公众根除宫颈癌死亡的期望尚未实现。从历史角度以及根据当前影响细胞学实验室的法规，审视了这一期望与巴氏涂片检测性能之间的差距。必须让公众了解巴氏涂片筛查宫颈癌的价值和局限性，并制定合理的检测操作规范。当前因所谓巴氏涂片假阴性引发的诉讼增多，有可能减少该检测的使用和可及性，而巴氏涂片仍被认为是所设计出的最有效的癌症筛查检测方法。
