A recent deceleration in the long established downwards trend in mortality from stroke combined with rapid ageing of the Australian population suggests that we may be facing a large and rapid increase in the caseload of stroke unless efficacious ways to prevent cerebrovascular disease are applied more systematically. This paper reviews the current situation, drawing on evidence from the Perth Community Stroke Study (PCSS).
