Two examples taken from computer programs for cognitive rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia show how different groups of clinicians attribute different meanings to the same exercise. This illustrates that the meaning of an artifact or a technology is socially constructed and thereby intimately bound to the context of use. This perspective has implications on issues such as the design process, the assessment of technology and the issue of standardization.
