Current status and perspectives of gerontology in Russia.

The current situation of Russian gerontology and its development after 1991 are analyzed in this paper. The potential of Russian gerontology has been evaluated as rather high, and includes not only leading scientific centers (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg), but also many other regions of the country. The main directions of current research in gerontology, the strategy recommended as a base for future research, and medico-social means for health, care and improving the quality of life of the elderly in all its aspects are also discussed.
