In his criticism of psychoanalytic institutions in 1956 Lacan was not truly an innovator: Bernfeld and Balint before him had already conducted a severe critical analysis of the training given to analysts within the I.P.A. Lacan's role as an innovator lies elsewhere: in his search for a solution to the questions raised by his predecessors, a solution that is intrinsically linked to his theorisation of the subject of the unconscious.
