In a six month period 2,379 new patients were treated in a designated major accident centre. Of these cases two thirds (67.9 per cent) were thought to be appropriate for management by general practitioners. I suggest that these cases are properly treated in an accident and emergency department and that these departments should be developed as part of the primary health care teams.
