In the past years, comprehensive attention has been paid on the monolithic materials for high performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC ) and capillary electrochromatography ( CEC) , due to their superior porosity, good permeability, large surface area and high diffusion mass transfer. They are well suited for both small molecules and large biopolymers. Monolithic polymer based stationary phases are the continuous unitary porous structure prepared by in situ polymerization inside the column tube and, if necessary, the surface can be functionalized with various functional groups. This review summarizes the development in preparation and application of polymer monoliths, mainly according to the literature published from 2003 to 2006.
