In rehabilitation medicine a multi-axial descriptive and theoretical model must be applied to do justice to the manifold aspects. In particular for psychosomatic medicine, but to the same extent also for disciplines concerned with the individual organs, it will necessary to pay attention to the social-interactional as well as to the development psychology aspects of these diseases and to their anatomic pathology and physiological pathology developments. The tasks and aims of psychosomatic rehabilitation medicine are described: diagnostics, details of hospitalisation and psychotherapy are described. To enhance the therapeutic value of the psychosomatic hospital somatotherapy and psychotherapy are co-ordinated for the patient's benefit. The special importance of psychosomatic rehabilitation for prevention is pointed out. A new, comprehensive re-orientation is aimed at to help patients to lead a generally healthier and more effective life.
