Free radical lipid oxidation and activity of lysosomal enzymes have been tested in 87 pregnant women with acquired and congenital heart diseases and pulmonary circulatory failure. Activation of lipid peroxidation directly correlated with the severity of circulatory failure. These processes aggravated maternal and fetal hypoxia. A management protocol was designed and tried using medical and nonmedical methods. Its use was associated with an appreciable reduction in perinatal morbidity and mortality rates in this pool of pregnancies.
