Abstract

OBJECTIVES

Preparations of herbal drugs have drawn considerable interest in scientific community in recent years for the treatment of several stress related health problems including radiation-injury.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An aqueous extract from Valeriana wallichii containing hesperidin as one of its major constituent was evaluated for its ability to protect against radiation-injury in model systems like plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and cultured human fibroblast cells.

RESULTS

The extract was found to significantly counter radiation-induced free radicals at 4 h after 5 Gy irradiation, reduced prolonged oxidative stress led increase in mitochondrial mass, enhanced reproductive viability of cultured cells and protected against radiation-induced DNA damage in solution.

DISCUSSION

Further studies are required to validate the radioprotective ability of the extract and to develop a safer radioprotective agent.

目的

近年来,草药制剂因可治疗包括辐射损伤在内的多种与压力相关的健康问题而在科学界引起了相当大的关注。

材料与方法

对一种以橙皮苷为主要成分之一的缬草水提取物进行评估,观察其在质粒脱氧核糖核酸(DNA)和培养的人成纤维细胞等模型系统中对辐射损伤的防护能力。

结果

发现该提取物在5 Gy照射后4小时能显著对抗辐射诱导的自由基,减少长时间氧化应激导致的线粒体质量增加,提高培养细胞的繁殖活力,并在溶液中防止辐射诱导的DNA损伤。

讨论

需要进一步研究以验证该提取物的辐射防护能力,并开发一种更安全的辐射防护剂。
