Abstract

Respirators with constant volume proved to have a distinct loss of originally set tidal volume, when mechanical respiratory disturbances are present. In cases with decreased compliance the loss of volume is mainly caused by compression of the basic volume of the apparatus. In cases with increased bronchial flow resistance - unfavourable inspiration - expiration ratio, too short or even lacking endinspiratory pressure plateau result in the distinct decrease of the set respiratory minute volume, which then requires an appropriate correction. The degree of volume loss was measured and analysed in 10 respirators which are in current use.
