Systematic cross-sectional and longitudinal studies on the effect of lithium treatment have been carried out over the last decade on large numbers of patients. The outcome of the studies is clear and consistent: Lithium treatment does not, not even when given for many years, lead to any change in the glomerular filtration rate, let alone to renal failure. Rises of urine volume and falls of renal concentration ability may occur, but they do not signal deterioration of glomerular function. The fear of eventual kidney insufficiency as a result of long-term lithium treatment can be set at rest.
在过去十年中，针对大量患者开展了关于锂治疗效果的系统性横断面研究和纵向研究。研究结果清晰且一致：锂治疗不会导致肾小球滤过率发生任何变化，即便长期使用多年亦是如此，更不会引发肾衰竭。尿量可能增加，肾脏浓缩能力可能下降，但这并不表明肾小球功能恶化。长期锂治疗会最终导致肾功能不全的担忧可以消除了。
