Abstract

AIM

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) on bone formation in cystic defects following cyst enucleation.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The sample was composed of sixteen patients with enucleated maxillary bony cystic lesions. With an age range from 20 - 44 grouped as eight Laser and eight Control patients. Laser group was subjected to low intensity diode laser immediately after surgery and then for three times per week for two weeks using a therapeutic laser irradiation. Group B (control group): patients were not subjected laser therapy.

RESULTS

The predictor variable was exposure of bone defect to LLLT or none. The outcome variable was bone density changes measured by digital radiographs at day 1 and days 90 postoperatively. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed. There were no statistically significant differences between the 2 groups for the bone density at day 1. There was a statistically significant difference in bone density changes in each group at day 90: Significant at P ≤ 0.05. After adjusting for differences in day 1 for bone density, the estimated mean change in bone density changes at day 90 was significantly larger for Laser compared with control.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggested that LLLT can enhance bone healing in maxillary cystic defects. This can serve as an adjunct method in preventing possible delayed healing and pathological fractures This also will be helpful for more researchers in early loading in case of dental implants to accelerate osseointegration.

摘要

目的

本研究旨在评估低强度激光治疗(LLLT)对囊肿摘除术后囊性缺损骨形成的影响。

患者与方法

样本由16例上颌骨囊肿摘除术后患者组成。年龄范围为20 - 44岁,分为8例激光治疗组和8例对照组。激光治疗组在手术后立即接受低强度二极管激光治疗,然后每周3次,持续2周,采用治疗性激光照射。B组(对照组):患者未接受激光治疗。

结果

预测变量为骨缺损是否接受LLLT治疗。结果变量为术后第1天和第90天通过数字化X线片测量的骨密度变化。计算描述性和双变量统计量。两组在术后第1天的骨密度无统计学显著差异。在第90天,每组的骨密度变化有统计学显著差异:P≤0.05时有显著性。在调整术后第1天骨密度的差异后,激光治疗组在第90天骨密度变化的估计平均变化与对照组相比显著更大。

结论

本研究结果表明,LLLT可促进上颌囊性缺损的骨愈合。这可作为一种辅助方法,预防可能的延迟愈合和病理性骨折。这对于更多研究人员在种植牙早期负重以加速骨整合方面也将有所帮助。
