Despite a wealth of biochemical data, the mechanism by which targets of the nonsense‐mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway are recognized during translation termination remains elusive. A new study by Neu‐Yilik (2017) using a fully reconstituted translation termination system reveals new roles for the NMD factor UPF3B in translation termination and a direct interaction between UPF3B and ribosome release factors.
