Burnout syndrome (BS) is highly prevalent among medical students and is associated with lower empathy and worsening of medical students ́ mental health. The aim of our study was to identify prevalence of BS during internship and its association with self-rated social support and participation in extracurricular activities in one medical school in Brazil.
This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2015, with 121 medical students on internship (56% response rate). They were evaluated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services (MBI) and assessed about socio demographic data, social support and extracurricular activities.
The overall BS prevalence was 57.5% among medical interns. High emotional exhaustion was present in 33.1% (N = 38) of interns, high depersonalization was observed in 45.7% (N = 58) and 36.2% of participants (N = 46) had low personal accomplishment. Individuals with participation in community services had lower frequency of depersonalization (prevalence ratio 0.61 CI95% 0.42-0.88). BS was not associated with different types of extracurricular activities and no association was found among BS and the behaviour of seeking social support.
We found high prevalence of BS in medical interns, however the behaviour of seeking social support had no association with BS. The interns participating in community activities had lower frequency of high depersonalization.
倦怠综合征（BS）在医学生中非常普遍，与同理心降低和医学生心理健康状况恶化有关。我们的研究目的是确定巴西一所医学院实习期间 BS 的患病率及其与自我评估的社会支持和参与课外活动之间的关系。
这是一项 2015 年进行的横断面研究，共有 121 名实习医学生（响应率为 56%）参与。他们使用 Maslach 倦怠量表-人类服务（MBI）进行评估，并评估社会人口统计学数据、社会支持和课外活动。
实习医学生的整体 BS 患病率为 57.5%。33.1%（N=38）的实习生存在高情绪衰竭，45.7%（N=58）和 36.2%（N=46）的实习生存在低个人成就感。参与社区服务的个体出现去人格化的频率较低（患病率比 0.61 CI95%0.42-0.88）。BS 与不同类型的课外活动无关，BS 与寻求社会支持的行为之间也没有关联。
我们发现实习医学生中 BS 的患病率很高，但寻求社会支持的行为与 BS 无关。参与社区活动的实习生出现高去人格化的频率较低。
