Familial dysplastic nevus syndrome is an autosomal-dominant precursor of hereditary melanoma in which individuals have clinically and histologically distinctive nevi and a markedly increased risk for development of melanoma. Dysplastic nevi also are found in sporadic forms. Classification of the condition of the patient and proper management including regular examination of nevi can help to determine the risk of melanoma and minimize the potential for neoplastic progression.
