Volunteer medical faculty with variable teaching experience often facilitate small groups for medical students. An initiative was designed to provide observation and feedback to pre-clerkship small group facilitators at our medical school, with 147 faculty participants over 2 years. The majority of respondents to a program evaluation survey found the observation moderately (44.7%) to extremely (23.7%) helpful. In total, 64.9% of respondents implemented some feedback into their teaching, and 64.9% felt that the program should be mandatory. Direct observation and feedback provided a well-received addition to the culture of deliberate practice that medical educators hope to foster.
