Abstract

Coating fabrics with natural rubber latex (NRL) dispersions containing various nanofillers offers a versatile approach for developing multifunctional fabrics. In this study, polyester/cotton blended fabrics were coated with NRL by incorporating 3 phr (parts per hundred rubber) of molybdenum disulfide-tannic acid dispersion (MT) and 7 phr of lignin nanoparticles (LNP) using a dipping method. Two types of coated fabric samples were prepared: single-cycle and double-cycle coated fabrics. Single-cycle coated fabrics were developed using NRL with a hybrid filler of MT and LNP (MLT). Two sets were prepared with sequential layers for double-cycle coated fabrics: one with an initial coating of NRL/MT followed by NRL/LNP, and the other with the reverse order. Single-cycle coated fabrics demonstrated superior mechanical strength (53 % improvement), acid durability, and UV-visible light shielding effectiveness due to the barrier effect of the hybrid MLT filler. In contrast, double-cycle coated fabrics exhibited excellent wound-healing potential, antimicrobial activity, and hydrophilicity. The single and double-cycle coated fabrics were non-toxic to cells and facilitated surface absorption of water and stains without penetration into the fabric, enabling effective stain removal and self-cleaning. Single-cycle coated fabrics are ideal for protective clothing applications, while double-cycle coated fabrics are better for biomedical applications.
