Microscopic pictures of furuncles are rare in dermatologic literature. This report illustrates features of a furuncle that was completely excised. There was destruction of the epidermis, remnants of the involved hair follicle within an area of tissue necrosis, a large abscess with many polymorphonuclear leukocytes and small clusters of Staphylococci. The contrast with an uninvolved hair follicle observed in the vicinity of the furuncle was striking.
