Abstract

The effect of a plasticizer (DEHP) of PVC blood bags on platelet response to hypotonic shock was examined. The response of the platelet concentrate (PC), stored in the bag in which DEHP elution was prevented by glow-discharge treatment, did not change until 72 h of storage. On the other hand, during PC storage in control bags or in plasma containing DEHP, the response decreased approximately linearly. The time course of DEHP incorporation into platelet agreed well with that of the decrease of the response to hypotonic shock.
