In 1993, a large epidemiological health study was carried out among a French school population, aged 11 to 19 (sample size = 12,391). Illicit drugs consumption was one of the topics investigated. 15% of French adolescents experimented illicit drugs, this proportion increased from 4% (11-12 aged old) to 30% (18 aged old and over). Young people who tasted illicit drugs went often to pubs and nightclubs. Multinomial regression analysis indicated that 1/sex, socio-economic status and parents' matrimonial status are only weakly related to drug consumption; 2/ location (urban, rural, suburban), nationality and origin (French, no French), participation to extra-curricular activities (e.g. sport) are not related to drug consumption. Involvements of prevention were suggested.
