Dr. Hernán Iturriaga is now President of Sociedad Médica de Santiago (Chilean Society of Internal Medicine) for the period 1995-1997. He received his M.D. title at the University of Chile in 1961 and his postgraduate training included a USPHS International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1966-1968) with Professors Hans Popper and Fenton Schaffner. He gained international reputation for his clinical and experimental studies on the effects of ethanol in the liver. Since 1982 he is Professor of Medicine at the University of Chile School of Medicine and in 1995 he became Director of the Chilean-Japanese Institute for Digestive Diseases.
