Health care systems are undergoing dramatic and rapid change. Innovations occurring within these systems have an impact on all facets of a system's performance and reshape its services as well as provider and patient roles. In this era of innovation, an essential survival skill for advanced practice nurses is an ability to use a macrosystem perspective to effectively strategize for role development and provision of services within practice settings experiencing rapid innovation. The Health Care System Innovation Model described in this article provides a framework for such a macrosystem perspective.
