Posttraumatic stress responses involve the development of characteristic symptoms of reexperiencing, arousal, and avoidance following exposure to a traumatic event. This article uses an infectious disease model to describe exposure and transmission of posttraumatic stress responses, individual susceptibility and resilience, onset of symptoms, and prevention and control.
