The antagonism of 5-HT3 receptor by mirtazapine results in an antiemetic effect, suggesting that mirtazapine could be considered a successful antiemetic agent in patients suffering from severe nausea and vomiting. There have been several reports of successful mirtazapine treatment for nausea or vomiting from secondary causes but cases of primary severe nausea and vomiting are still lacking, in particular, there are no reported cases in Asians. The authors report two cases with severe nausea and vomiting that were dramatically treated with mirtazapine in the Korean population.
