Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory mucosal disease of unknown aetiology. Recently, increased oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and lipid peroxidation level, in the saliva of patients with OLP.
Thirty patients with OLP (15 men, 15 women; mean age 44.0, SD +/- 11.4 years) and 30 control subjects (16 men, 14 women; aged 23-67 years), matched for age and gender, were enrolled in this case and control study. This study was conducted at the Clinic of Oral Medicine of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2007. The unstimulated whole saliva malondialdehyde (MDA), as an indicator of lipid peroxidation and TAC levels were assayed by thiobarbituric acid and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), respectively, in both groups.
Mean levels of saliva MDA, but not TAC, in patients with OLP was significantly higher than those of the control group.
We conclude that OLP patients have more cellular lipid peroxidation than healthy subjects.
口腔扁平苔藓(OLP)是一种病因不明的慢性炎症性黏膜疾病。最近,氧化应激的增加被认为与各种疾病的发病机制有关。本研究旨在评估 OLP 患者唾液中的总抗氧化能力(TAC)和脂质过氧化水平。
本病例对照研究共纳入 30 名 OLP 患者(男 15 名,女 15 名;平均年龄 44.0 岁,标准差 +/- 11.4 岁)和 30 名年龄和性别匹配的对照者。该研究于 2007 年在德黑兰医科大学口腔医学科进行。通过硫代巴比妥酸法测定唾液丙二醛(MDA)作为脂质过氧化的指标,通过铁还原抗氧化能力(FRAP)测定 TAC 水平,分别检测两组的 MDA 和 TAC 水平。
与对照组相比,OLP 患者唾液 MDA 的平均水平显著升高,但 TAC 水平无显著差异。
我们得出结论,OLP 患者的细胞脂质过氧化水平高于健康受试者。
