Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To examine the effect of green tea extract on body weight, serum levels of glucose, and lipids in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

METHODS

This experimental study was carried out in the Diabetes Research Center, Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran from January 2011 to March 2011. Forty-eight male wistar rats (200-250 g) were divided randomly into 6 groups. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of stereptozotocin (55 mg/kg). The experimental groups received alcohol extract of green tea leaves (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) for 4 weeks and the body weight of animals were measured every day. Finally, blood samples were collected and analyzed for glucose and lipid profile levels.

RESULTS

Administration of green tea extract caused a significant decrease in serum glucose and total cholesterol levels and significantly improved the body weight loss in diabetic rats treated with 200 mg/kg green tea in comparison to diabetic control group. No significant changes were observed in triglyceride (p=0.04), low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (p=0.000), and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol levels (p=0.01) following intervention.

CONCLUSION

It appears that green tea extract had both antihyperglycemic and hypocholesterolmic effects in diabetic rats, although further work is needed to determine their mechanism.

目的

研究绿茶提取物对链脲佐菌素诱导的糖尿病大鼠体重、血糖水平及血脂的影响。

方法

本实验研究于2011年1月至2011年3月在伊朗阿瓦士医科大学糖尿病研究中心进行。48只雄性Wistar大鼠(200 - 250克)随机分为6组。通过单次腹腔注射链脲佐菌素(55毫克/千克)诱导糖尿病。实验组接受绿茶叶乙醇提取物(100毫克/千克和200毫克/千克),持续4周,每天测量动物体重。最后,采集血样并分析血糖和血脂水平。

结果

与糖尿病对照组相比,给予绿茶提取物后,血清葡萄糖和总胆固醇水平显著降低,且给予200毫克/千克绿茶治疗的糖尿病大鼠体重减轻情况得到显著改善。干预后,甘油三酯(p = 0.04)、低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(p = 0.000)和高密度脂蛋白胆固醇水平(p = 0.01)未见显著变化。

结论

绿茶提取物在糖尿病大鼠中似乎具有降血糖和降胆固醇作用,尽管需要进一步研究以确定其作用机制。
