Abstract

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to analyze the neural encoding of verbal and nonverbal stimuli in individuals with autism spectrum disorder using brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

METHODOLOGY

Thirty individuals between 7 and 12 years of age and of both genders participated in this study. Fifteen were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and 15 had typical development. All subjects had normal hearing and no other impairments. An electrophysiological hearing assessment was performed using brainstem auditory evoked potentials with click and speech stimuli.

RESULTS

In the brainstem auditory evoked potentials with click stimuli, the mean wave I latency was longer for the right ear in both groups, and interpeak intervals III-V were greater for the individuals with autism spectrum disorder. For brainstem auditory evoked potentials with speech stimuli, wave V latency was shorter in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

CONCLUSION

These data suggest that individuals with autism spectrum disorder may have a dysfunction of the central auditory nervous system for nonverbal stimuli and faster neural encoding of the initial part of the verbal stimulus, suggesting hypersensitivity to complex sounds such as speech.

目的

本研究旨在使用脑干听觉诱发电位分析自闭症谱系障碍个体对言语和非言语刺激的神经编码。

方法

本研究共纳入 30 名 7 至 12 岁的男性和女性参与者。其中 15 名被诊断为自闭症谱系障碍,15 名具有典型发育。所有受试者均有正常听力且无其他障碍。使用脑干听觉诱发电位对 click 和 speech 刺激进行电生理听力评估。

结果

在 click 刺激的脑干听觉诱发电位中,两组的右侧耳平均波 I 潜伏期较长,自闭症谱系障碍个体的 III-V 间期较大。对于 speech 刺激的脑干听觉诱发电位,自闭症谱系障碍个体的波 V 潜伏期较短。

结论

这些数据表明,自闭症谱系障碍个体可能存在非言语刺激的中枢听觉神经系统功能障碍,以及言语刺激初始部分的更快神经编码,提示对复杂声音(如言语)的过度敏感。
