Abstract

BACKGROUND

Release of metallic ions, especially nickel and chromium, present in orthodontic fixed appliance attachments such as brackets and archwires has been a basis of concern in current years. The present study was conducted to assess nickel and chromium level in gingival crevicular fluid in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment were divided into 2 groups of 20 each. Group I was fixed orthodontic treatment group and was given nonfluoridated toothpaste and Group II was fixed orthodontic treatment group and was given fluoridated toothpaste. The assessment of salivary nickel and chromium levels was done using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

In group I, there were 6 male and 14 female and in group II 7 males and 13 females. The mean nickel level (ng/ml) before treatment in group I was 0.49 and in group II was 0.52, on 7 day was 0.52 and 0.54, on 30 day was 13.4 and 100.2, and on 6 month was 0.54 and 0.52 in Group I and II, respectively. The mean chromium level (ng/ml) before treatment in Group I was 0.48 and in Group II was 0.52, on 7 day was 0.52 and 0.53, on 30 day was 40.6 and 62.4 and on 6 month was 4.9 and 0.52 in Group I and II, respectively. The difference was significant ( < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The release of metal ions such as nickel and chromium was more with fluoridated toothpaste as compared to nonfluoridated toothpaste in patients undergoing fixed orthodontics.

近年来,正畸固定矫治器附件(如托槽和弓丝)中存在的金属离子尤其是镍和铬的释放一直是人们关注的焦点。本研究旨在评估正畸治疗患者龈沟液中镍和铬的水平。

材料与方法

40名接受固定正畸治疗的患者被分为两组,每组20人。第一组为固定正畸治疗组,使用非含氟牙膏;第二组为固定正畸治疗组,使用含氟牙膏。采用电感耦合等离子体质谱法评估唾液中镍和铬的水平。

结果

第一组有6名男性和14名女性,第二组有7名男性和13名女性。第一组治疗前镍的平均水平(ng/ml)为0.49,第二组为0.52;第7天时,第一组为0.52,第二组为0.54;第30天时,第一组为13.4,第二组为100.2;第6个月时,第一组为0.54,第二组为0.52。第一组治疗前铬的平均水平(ng/ml)为0.48,第二组为0.52;第7天时,第一组为0.52,第二组为0.53;第30天时,第一组为40.6,第二组为62.4;第6个月时,第一组为4.9,第二组为0.52。差异具有统计学意义(<0.05)。

结论

在接受固定正畸治疗的患者中,与非含氟牙膏相比,含氟牙膏导致镍和铬等金属离子的释放更多。
