Three species of ( kitag., bunge., and pall.) were the main source for an important traditional Chinese medicine, "Longdan", which was first mentioned in " Shennong materia medica Sutra " 2000 years ago. Until recently, there were very few reports on taxonomic classification of these three traditional medicinal species. In the current study, chloroplast genomes of the three species were sequenced and the phylogenetic analyses were performed in combination with 31 NCBI downloaded species sequences and two species of as outgroup. Based on the phylogenetic results, a new taxonomic classification for was proposed including 4 independent clades with 6 subdivisions (Group 1-Group 6). All the general features, SSR characteristics and gene composition of chloroplast genomes strongly supported such a new classification system for , which could lay a theoretical foundation for in the molecular evolutionary research. Finally, phylogenetic analyisis also demonstrated that the three examined species from could cluster together into one group (Group 6), which was far away from the evolutionary position of the medicinal species, Franch, which was consistent with the traditional classification in traditional medicinal uses and taxonomy.

三种龙胆属植物(条叶龙胆、粗糙龙胆和秦艽)是重要传统中药“龙胆”的主要来源,“龙胆”在2000年前的《神农本草经》中首次被提及。直到最近,关于这三种传统药用龙胆属植物的分类学报道还非常少。在本研究中,对这三种龙胆属植物的叶绿体基因组进行了测序,并结合从NCBI下载的31种龙胆属植物序列以及两种外类群獐牙菜属植物序列进行了系统发育分析。基于系统发育结果,提出了一个新的龙胆属分类,包括4个独立分支和6个亚分支(第1组 - 第6组)。龙胆属叶绿体基因组的所有一般特征、简单序列重复(SSR)特征和基因组成都有力地支持了这样一个新的龙胆属分类系统,这可为龙胆属的分子进化研究奠定理论基础。最后,系统发育分析还表明,所研究的三种龙胆属植物可以聚为一组(第6组),这与药用植物川西獐牙菜的进化位置相距甚远,这与传统药用用途和分类学中的传统分类一致。
