The World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control mandates smoke-free environments to protect nonsmokers, especially minors, from secondhand smoke (SHS) globally. This study aimed to assess the exposure of SHS among nonsmokers in households from Chengalpattu district.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 participants. A convenience sampling technique was used. A self-administered 11-item questionnaire was used assess the exposure to SHS.
Among the 500 study participants, 242 (48.4%) and 258 (51.6%) belonged to male and female groups, respectively, which was found to be not statistically significant. Among the 500 study participants, 146 (29.2%) responded that SHS will cause harm to adults, and 354 (70.8%) responded that SHS will not cause harm to adults.
SHS exposure had not significantly reduced at home, public places, and workplaces among nonsmokers.
