Abstract

In rats with hypothyroid condition induced by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy or mercazolyl feeding a comparative cytophotometric study of the protein content in the nuclei and the cytoplasm of hepatocytes and their area was carried out. The animals of both experimental groups displayed a marked reduction of the protein-synthesis function and also atrophy of the mentioned hepatocyte structures. However, in animals given mercazolyl these changes occurred earlier and were more pronounced, this indicating the combined effect of thyroid insufficiency and mercazolyl. Irrespective of the method of induction of the hypothyroid state (surgical or by drugs) disturbance of protein synthesis in the hepatocyte nuclei took place much earlier and was more intensive than in the cytoplasm.
