Recent nursing literature reflects growing interest in spiritual care; however, despite evidence supporting the importance of educational preparation for spiritual care in nursing, little attention has been given to teaching strategies. This article confronts the limitations of a spiritual care education approach that focuses solely on knowledge and expertise. A case is presented for the importance of developing an environment within nursing programs that fosters the spiritual growth of nursing students. Strategies to enhance the abilities of students to be present for patients are discussed as examples of approaches to spiritual care education that promote students' strengths.
