Abstract

Resistance to antimicrobials and particularly multidrug resistance is one of the greatest challenges in the health system nowadays. The continual increase in the rates of antimicrobial resistance worldwide boosted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic poses a major public health threat. Different approaches have been employed to minimize the effect of resistance and control this threat, but the question still lingers as to their safety and efficiency. In this context, new anti-infectious approaches against multidrug resistance are being examined. Use of new antibiotics and their combination with new β-lactamase inhibitors, phage therapy, antimicrobial peptides, nanoparticles, and antisense antimicrobial therapeutics are considered as one such promising approach for overcoming bacterial resistance. In this review, we provide insights into these emerging alternative therapies that are currently being evaluated and which may be developed in the future to break the progression of antimicrobial resistance. We focus on their advantages and limitations and potential application in medicine. We further highlight the importance of the combination therapy approach, wherein two or more therapies are used in combination in order to more effectively combat infectious disease and increasing access to quality healthcare. These advances could give an alternate solution to overcome antimicrobial drug resistance. We eventually hope to provide useful information for clinicians who are seeking solutions to the problems caused by antimicrobial resistance.

对抗菌药物的耐药性,尤其是多重耐药性,是当今卫生系统面临的最大挑战之一。在持续的新冠疫情推动下,全球抗菌药物耐药率不断上升,这构成了重大的公共卫生威胁。人们已采用不同方法来尽量减少耐药性的影响并控制这一威胁,但这些方法的安全性和有效性问题仍然存在。在这种背景下,针对多重耐药性的新型抗感染方法正在接受研究。使用新型抗生素及其与新型β-内酰胺酶抑制剂的联合使用、噬菌体疗法、抗菌肽、纳米颗粒和反义抗菌疗法被认为是克服细菌耐药性的一种有前景的方法。在这篇综述中,我们深入探讨了这些正在评估且未来可能会得到发展的新兴替代疗法,以打破抗菌药物耐药性的发展进程。我们关注它们的优点和局限性以及在医学中的潜在应用。我们进一步强调联合治疗方法的重要性,即在治疗中联合使用两种或更多种疗法,以便更有效地对抗传染病并增加获得优质医疗保健的机会。这些进展可能会为克服抗菌药物耐药性提供替代解决方案。我们最终希望为寻求解决抗菌药物耐药性所导致问题的临床医生提供有用信息。
