Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Allergic rhinitis and asthma are two common respiratory diseases with allergic etiology in the world's population. Eosinophils and serum IgE levels have been known as inflammatory allergy markers for many years. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation of nasal and blood eosinophils with serum IgE levels in allergic rhinitis and asthma patients.

METHODS

This prospective study was done on patients ( = 78) diagnosed with asthma ( = 20), allergic rhinitis ( = 49), and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) ( = 9) at our hospital in Ahvaz City, Iran. The age of participants in our study ranged from 3 to 73 years, and all of them were subjected to a complete blood count (CBC) test, nasal smear, and determination of serum IgE levels after their consent.

RESULTS

There was no correlation between serum IgE level and nasal eosinophil count ( = 0.728) or between serum IgE level and blood eosinophil count ( = 0.657); however, a positive correlation was detected between blood and nasal eosinophil levels ( = 0.003).

CONCLUSION

There is no significant relationship between serum IgE level and eosinophil count in the blood and nasal secretions. Serum IgE level and blood or nasal eosinophil count are both useful biomarkers for monitoring allergic rhinitis and asthma individually, but no diagnostic conclusion can be drawn from their correlation.

背景与目的

变应性鼻炎和哮喘是世界人群中两种常见的具有变应性病因的呼吸道疾病。多年来,嗜酸性粒细胞和血清IgE水平一直被视为炎症性过敏标志物。本研究旨在评估变应性鼻炎和哮喘患者鼻和血嗜酸性粒细胞与血清IgE水平的相关性。

方法

本前瞻性研究在伊朗阿瓦士市我们医院诊断为哮喘(n = 20)、变应性鼻炎(n = 49)和慢性鼻-鼻窦炎伴鼻息肉(CRSwNP)(n = 9)的患者(n = 78)中进行。我们研究中参与者的年龄范围为3至73岁,所有参与者在获得同意后均接受全血细胞计数(CBC)检测、鼻涂片检查以及血清IgE水平测定。

结果

血清IgE水平与鼻嗜酸性粒细胞计数之间无相关性(r = 0.728),血清IgE水平与血嗜酸性粒细胞计数之间也无相关性(r = 0.657);然而血和鼻嗜酸性粒细胞水平之间检测到正相关(r = 0.003)。

结论
