The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of underlying emotional disorders and associated risk factors in patients with facial dermatoses in the dermatology outpatient department.
All patients with facial dermatoses attending our dermatology clinic from January 2023 to January 2024 were included in the retrospective study. Basic demographic data were collected. All patients were screened for emotional disorders using a simple questionnaire called the Huaxi Emotional-Distress Index (HEI) at the time of consultation. Bivariate analysis and logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with HEI scores greater than 8.
Two hundred and twelve patients were included in the study including 125 males and 87 females. Sixty patients (28.3%) had a HEI score of > 8. The causes of emotional disorders in patients with facial dermatoses were age, gender and number of visits. After logistic regression analysis, younger age and more number of visits were risk factors for emotional disorders.
A high percentage of patients with facial dermatoses in dermatology outpatient department have emotional disorders. Dermatologists need to focus on patients who are at risk of developing emotional disorders, especially younger patients with more number of visits.
