Intraperitoneal injection of live spleen and lymph node cells from Coombs positive NZB/B1 mice induces an increase in the total number of peritoneal exudate cells (PE cells) and splenomegaly in recipient Coombs negative animals and Balb/c mice. The recipient's PE cells showed an increased uptake of I BSA and a decreased degradation of the BSA in culture. The possibility that the living spleen and lymph node cells elaborate a lymphocyte activation product that affects the activity of macrophages is discussed.
