The pre-treatment of hooded female rats with horse anti-rat lymphocyte IgG suppresses and/or delays their primary humoral antibody response to alum precipitated bovine serum albumin. Treatment with anti-lymphocytic antibody commencing 4 hr after the administration of antigen proved ineffective. The non-cytotoxic F(ab') fragments prepared from horse and rabbit anti-rat lymphocyte IgG both failed to inhibit the primary response to alum precipitated bovine serum albumin when administered prior to antigen. The significance of these results in relationship to the immunosuppressive properties of anti-lymphocytic antibody is discussed.
