Abstract

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

() and () have been largely used in Moroccan folk medicine. The objective of the study was to investigate the phytochemical composition, the antioxidant activity, the antiproliferative effect, and the acute toxicity of the methanolic extract of and roots.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Phytochemical composition of the methanolic extract of and roots were studied using qualitative and quantitative methods, the antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH assay, the antiproliferative effects against human cancer cell lines (T-24, HT-29, and Hep G-2) was assessed using WST1 assay, and the acute toxicity was carried out orally by gavage of single dose 2000 mg/kg to mice for 14 days.

RESULTS

The two studied plants have different classes of secondary metabolites. The concentrations of the total polyphenolic content of and root extracts were estimated at 360 ± 20 mg GAE/g and 280 ± 27 mg GAE/g, respectively. The total flavonoids content of and extracts were estimated at 35 ± 8 mg QE/g and 235 ± 7 mg QE/g, respectively. and extracts exhibited promising DPPH activity with IC values of 150 ± 8 g/ml and 160 ± 10 g/ml, respectively. The extracts exerted also antiproliferative effects on all tested cancer cell lines (T-24, HT-29, and Hep G-2) with IC values ranging from 6 ± 1 g/ml to 380 ± 7 g/ml. Regarding the results of acute toxicity study, no signs of toxicities nor mortalities were observed on the oral treated mice with 2000 mg/kg of the two investigated exacts.

CONCLUSION

The methanolic extracts of and possess several phytochemicals that exhibited promising free radical scavenging activity and antiproliferative effects.

采用定性和定量方法研究()和()根甲醇提取物的植物化学成分,用DPPH法评估抗氧化活性,用WST1法评估对人癌细胞系(T - 24、HT - 29和Hep G - 2)的抗增殖作用,并对小鼠进行单次口服灌胃2000mg/kg剂量,持续14天以进行急性毒性试验。

结果

所研究的两种植物具有不同类别的次生代谢产物。()和()根提取物的总多酚含量分别估计为360±20mg GAE/g和280±27mg GAE/g。()和()提取物的总黄酮含量分别估计为35±8mg QE/g和235±7mg QE/g。()和()提取物表现出良好的DPPH活性,IC值分别为150±8μg/ml和160±10μg/ml。提取物对所有测试的癌细胞系(T - 24、HT - 29和Hep G - 2)也具有抗增殖作用,IC值范围为6±1μg/ml至380±7μg/ml。关于急性毒性研究结果,用2000mg/kg的两种研究提取物口服处理的小鼠未观察到毒性迹象或死亡情况。

结论
