Abstract

BACKGROUND

Values are foundational principles that guide individuals' actions and behaviors. In nursing education, personal and professional values should be harmonised to promote both professional development and the delivery of high quality care. However, limited research has examined the integration of these values or nursing students' needs for values-based actions. The Acceptance and Commitment Approach may be an innovative perspective for the understanding of nursing students' values. This study aimed to explore nursing students' personal and professional values, the relationship between these values, and their needs for values-based actions, through the lens of the Acceptance and Commitment Approach.

METHODS

This study adopted a descriptive qualitative design, guided by the Acceptance and Commitment Approach. Data were collected through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with 20 final-year nursing students, selected via purposive sampling. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed manually using deductive thematic analysis based on the core constructs of the approach. Ethical approval and informed consent (both written and verbal) were obtained before data collection.

FINDINGS

Two main themes were identified: (1) Values, including personal values (such as kindness, dignity, and helpfulness), professional values (such as respect, advocacy, and holistic care), the importance of harmony between personal and professional values, and living a meaningful life with values; and (2) Needs for Values-Based Actions, encompassing psychosocial needs (e.g., clarifying values, building communication skills, managing stress, and developing self-confidence) and educational needs (e.g., receiving constructive feedback, observing role models).

CONCLUSION

As a result, the alignment of personal and professional values is crucial for fostering meaningful lives and delivering high-quality patient care. Moreover, this study identified that nursing students possess core values that guide their practices and that they have psychosocial and educational needs to engage in values-based actions. Therefore, the integration of value-centred approaches into nursing curricula is essential to promote holistic, ethically based, and patient-centred care practices.

背景

价值观是指导个人行动和行为的基本原则。在护理教育中,个人价值观和职业价值观应相互协调,以促进专业发展和高质量护理服务的提供。然而,关于这些价值观的整合或护理专业学生对基于价值观行动的需求的研究有限。接纳与承诺方法可能是理解护理专业学生价值观的一个创新视角。本研究旨在通过接纳与承诺方法的视角,探索护理专业学生的个人价值观和职业价值观、这些价值观之间的关系以及他们对基于价值观行动的需求。

方法

本研究采用描述性定性设计,以接纳与承诺方法为指导。通过目的抽样选取20名护理学专业最后一年的学生,进行半结构化面对面访谈收集数据。访谈内容逐字转录,并基于该方法的核心构建,采用演绎主题分析法进行人工分析。在数据收集前获得了伦理批准和知情同意(包括书面和口头同意)。

结果

确定了两个主要主题:(1)价值观,包括个人价值观(如善良、尊严和乐于助人)、职业价值观(如尊重、支持和整体护理)、个人价值观与职业价值观和谐的重要性以及以有价值观的方式过有意义的生活;(2)基于价值观行动的需求,包括心理社会需求(如明确价值观、培养沟通技巧、管理压力和增强自信)和教育需求(如接受建设性反馈、观察榜样)。

结论

因此,个人价值观与职业价值观的一致对于培养有意义的生活和提供高质量的患者护理至关重要。此外,本研究发现护理专业学生拥有指导其实践的核心价值观,并且他们有心理社会和教育需求来参与基于价值观的行动。因此,将以价值观为中心的方法纳入护理课程对于促进全面、基于伦理和以患者为中心的护理实践至关重要。
