A novel Gram-stain-negative, phosphate-solubilizing and siderophore producing bacterium, which we designated as strain ACCC 02193, was separated from ore, collected in Zhongxiang, Hubei of China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed strain ACCC 02193 is in the genus Erwinia and had highest similarities to Erwinia tasmaniensis DSM 17950 (99.32%) and Erwinia billingiae DSM 17872 (98.77%). However, phylogenomic analyses clearly showed that the strain ACCC 02193 was most closely related to Erwinia phyllosphaerae CMYE1. The strain grew at 28 °C-30 °C optimally, with 0-6% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 5%), and in the range of pH 4.0-10.0 (optimum pH 8.0). Menaquinone was identified as Q-8. The predominant fatty acids (> 10.0%) were C, C cyclo, summed feature 3 (Cω7c and/or Cω6c) and summed feature 8 (Cω7c and/or Cω6c). Genome comparisons showed that the strain shared ≤ 82.8% average nucleotide identity (ANI) and ≤ 27.2% in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (DDH) values with closely related type strains, respectively, which supported our conclusion that ACCC 02193 represented a novel species in the genus Erwinia. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 55.7%. Based on the results of physiological and biochemical characteristics, genotypic data, as well as genome comparisons, we demonstrated that type strain ACCC 02193 (= GDMCC 1.4563 = JCM 37069) is a novel species in the genus Erwinia, and we propose the name Erwinia aeris sp. nov.
