Abstract

CONTEXT

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and concerns regarding adverse drug reactions have prompted interest in natural alternatives for antimicrobial treatments, particularly in endodontics.

AIMS

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of mangosteen, chitosan, and their combination as intracanal medicaments against .

SETTINGS AND DESIGN

A double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted involving 40 patients with single-rooted nonvital teeth ( = 10 per group). Patients were assigned to four groups: Group 1 - Mangosteen, Group 2 - Chitosan, Group 3 - Mangosteen with Chitosan, and Group 4 - Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH), control). Samples were collected before chemo-mechanical preparation (S1) and after 7 days of medicament application (S2).

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

Following standard intracanal procedures, medicaments were applied, and bacterial samples were collected at baseline and after treatment. Colony-forming units (CFU) were assessed to measure the bacterial load.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED

Data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance ( < 0.05) followed by post hoc Tukey test to compare CFU reductions among groups.

RESULTS

All groups showed significant CFU reduction. The Mangosteen with Chitosan group demonstrated the highest reduction (84.57%), followed by Chitosan (79.99%), Mangosteen (77.06%), and Ca(OH). No adverse effects were reported.

CONCLUSIONS

The combination of mangosteen and chitosan showed the most effective antimicrobial activity, suggesting its potential as a natural and effective intracanal medicament.
